Frequently Asked Questions
1. What ages are Girl Scouts?
The Girl Scout Program begins at age 5 and continues through the completion of the 12th grade. Girls may join at any age in between.

2. What is the cost for joining Girl Scouts?
The national dues are $10 for each girl or adult who wishes to join. Some troops may request their own dues. Girl Scouts in 1st grade and beyond may also participate in fundraisers including the annual Fall Products Sale and Girl Scout Cookie Sale.

3. Why do Girl Scouts sell cookies?
The Girl Scout Cookie sale is more than just a fundraiser, though it is a very important source of revenue for many troops. More importantly, it teaches girls about setting and achieving goals, handling money, marketing, entrepreneurship, and public speaking.

4. How can I join Girl Scouts?
To join Girl Scouts in the Seguin area, call 830-303-2031. For more information about joining Girl Scouts in other areas, visit www.girlscouts.org.

5. What are Girl Scout program goals?
The four program goals in Girl Scouting are: developing self-potential, relating to others, developing values, and contributing to society.

6. When does the troop meet?
Troops meet after school, in the early evening, or weekends. The leader sets the day, time, and place of the meeting. She will contact you with that information when your daughter is placed.

7. When do troop meetings start?
The Girl Scout membership year is from October - September, so most troops start meeting in September or October. Troops, however, can start meeting anytime during the membership year.

8. What is the Girl Scout uniform?
Girl Scouts are encouraged, but not required, to wear their uniforms. A girl is considered to be "in uniform" when she wears her Girl Scout membership pin. Many troops have an informal uniform which they create themselves, such as a troop T-Shirt or sweatshirt.

9. How can I get financial assistance?
Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults regardless of ability to pay. Financial assistance is available for almost any need in Girl Scouting and requests are confidential. To request financial assistance please fill out the Financial Partnership Application Form.

10. Do I need to be a troop leader to volunteer?
No! There are many volunteer opportunities, train other adults, handle publicity, be a consultant, lead song workshops, chaperone weekend trips, help initiate community projects, work on fund raising, help coordinate the cookie sale, teach girls about your culture, help lead a troop, teach girls about careers, and much, much more!

11. Who can volunteer?
Any concerned, responsible adult who has a genuine interest in making a positive difference in girls development. Interested adults can fill out a Volunteer Interest Form or call Janice at 830-303-2031.

12. Can men volunteer for Girl Scouts?
YES! Men can volunteer in any capacity ranging from helping a leader as an assistant leader to offering skills in workshops or assist chaperoning a group of girls on a trip. Men can engage in a wide variety of volunteer opportunities offered by our council.

13. How much time will it take?
This depends on your volunteer position. We can accommodate the busiest schedule! Short-term projects involve the time it takes to plan and carry out the activity. Long-term project commitments require training, meeting preparation, meeting time and monthly leaders meeting.

14. What kind of training is available?
Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas provides free basic training and a variety of specialized workshops for volunteers. The Training page of their website lists these training opportunities.
